How to get through winter with a Tesla: 7 practical tips for range and comfort
In winter, the range of every electric car drops. The battery delivers less power in the cold, heating draws energy and the road adds more resistance. It isn't a fault, it's physics. The good news is that a few simple habits can shrink the difference considerably and keep driving pleasant.
1. Precondition while the car is plugged in
Preconditioning makes the biggest difference. Set your departure time in the Tesla app or the vehicle settings and the car warms the cabin and battery by itself. If it's plugged in at the time, the energy comes from the grid rather than the battery. You leave in a warm car with a full battery.
2. Charge regularly and don't leave the battery nearly empty
In cold weather it's a good idea to leave the car plugged in overnight, especially if it's parked outside. A warm battery charges faster and more efficiently. In everyday use, avoid leaving the battery close to empty for long.
3. Plan for a lower range
Read the range estimate more realistically in winter than in summer. On longer trips plan your charging with a margin and use the car's navigation, which can warm the battery ahead of a charger.
4. Heat smartly
Heated seats and a heated steering wheel are more economical than warming the whole cabin, because they warm you directly. Don't overdo the cabin temperature and let the seat heating provide part of the comfort.
5. Check your tire pressure
Tire pressure drops in the cold, which raises consumption and wear. Check it at least once a month on cold tires and follow the values on the label in the driver's door jamb. Winter tires belong on the car in the cold season mainly for safety.
6. Use regenerative braking with care
On wet or snowy roads, regenerative braking behaves differently than on dry ones. Drive smoothly, keep a good distance and be careful when lifting off the accelerator abruptly on slippery surfaces.
7. Don't forget wipers, washer fluid and seals
Frozen door seals and worn wipers can spoil a morning. Top up the washer fluid with an antifreeze mix and check the wipers before winter.
If your car shows a warning in winter, or the range seems to have dropped more than usual, don't leave it for later. We're happy to check the vehicle.
